What Bends a Garage Door Track in the First Place

Track Is Designed to Guide, Not to Carry

Garage door track is light steel formed into a channel. Its job is to hold rollers on a path while the springs carry the load. It is not structural, and it is not expected to resist sideways force. That is why it deforms so readily when it receives any, and why a bend is a symptom of something having pushed on it.

Vehicle Contact

The obvious cause and still the most common. A bumper against a vertical rail, a wing mirror, a trailer being reversed, a door opened into the track in a narrow garage. Damage is usually low on the vertical section and often looks minor. It matters because that is exactly where the door travels slowest and where the rollers spend most of their time.

Operating a Door With a Broken Spring

A door running on one spring is heavy and unbalanced, and all of that unevenness is transferred into the rails and their brackets. A single cycle usually does no harm. A week of getting the car out every morning frequently bends the curve section, which is the part under the most stress and the part that is hardest to straighten well.

Loose Brackets and Slow Movement

Every bracket holding the rails is a fastener in timber or masonry taking a small shock several thousand times a year. They loosen. Once one has moved, the rail is being pulled out of line by the door itself on every cycle, and over months that becomes a permanent set in the steel. This is the least dramatic cause and probably the most frequent one.

Building Settlement

Garage openings move. Slabs settle, timber shrinks, and in parts of Orange County ordinary seasonal soil movement is enough to shift a large opening by a noticeable amount over years. The rails are fixed to that structure, so they move with it. The signature is a door that has slowly developed an uneven gap along the floor or one side, with no single event to blame.

Corrosion at the Base

The bottom foot of a vertical rail lives closest to the floor, where water pools and where salt laden air condenses in a coastal garage. Rust does not bend a track, but it thins it, and a thinned rail deforms under a load that would previously have been harmless. It is worth looking at the base of both rails specifically when a door starts binding low in its travel.

Straighten or Replace

A gentle bow in a straight vertical section can often be dressed back and the rail re used, particularly if the steel is otherwise sound. A kink with a crease in it has work hardened at the fold and will never hold its shape again. Damage in the curved section is generally a replacement, because the radius is formed to a specific profile and a hand straightened curve rarely runs true. Perforated or badly rusted rail is a replacement regardless of shape.

Repairing the Rail Without Fixing the Cause

A straightened track on loose brackets bends again. A new rail on a door that is out of balance bends again. A perfect rail in a settled opening will still bind, because the geometry it is fixed to is what is wrong. Every track repair should end with the brackets checked and tightened, the door balance verified by hand, and the two rails measured against each other, which is the subject of the next guide.
