How a Garage Door Jumps Its Track
It Looks Sudden and It Is Not
A door coming off its rail is loud, alarming and visually dramatic, which makes it feel like a single event. It is the end of a sequence. Something changed the relationship between the rollers and the rails, the door ran anyway, and at some point a wheel found the open edge of a rail instead of the inside of it. The useful question after a derailment is not how to put it back but what let it happen.
A Cable Off Its Drum
The most common precursor. Each lift cable winds onto a drum on the torsion shaft, and if one cable goes slack, unwinds unevenly or jumps out of its groove, that side of the door loses support. The door then rises crooked, one set of rollers binds against the rail, and the corner lifts out. The tell is a door that is visibly higher on one side, or one that stopped square and started tilting over a few weeks.
A Seized Roller
A roller that no longer rotates gets dragged along the rail instead of rolling down it. Dragging generates side loads the rail was never meant to take, particularly at the curve where the vertical track becomes horizontal. Enough of that and the wheel climbs. This is the failure that most often follows years of noise that nobody acted on.
An Obstruction the Opener Pushed Through
A ladder leaning in the opening, a bicycle handlebar, a bin, a car bumper parked a few inches too far forward. If the opener force is set high, the door will not stop at the obstruction, it will push, and the door will deflect around it. Doors that have come off after an obstruction usually also reveal that the force settings had been increased at some point to cure a different complaint.
Loose or Bent Track Brackets
The rails are held to the wall and ceiling by brackets that are themselves bolted into timber or masonry. Vibration works fasteners loose over years, and a bracket that has moved a quarter of an inch has moved the rail with it. Once a rail is no longer parallel with its partner, the rollers are being forced sideways every cycle until one of them leaves.
A Broken Spring That the Door Kept Running On
When one spring of a pair breaks, the door becomes far heavier and unbalanced side to side. Operating it in that condition, whether by opener or by hand, is the single most reliable way to bend a track and drop a door. This is the reason the standard advice after a spring failure is to stop using the door entirely rather than to get one more use out of it.
What to Do in the First Ten Minutes
Stop operating the door and unplug the opener so nobody tries. Do not attempt to lever, hammer or pull the door back into the rail: a partially derailed door is being held by whatever is left, and the stored energy in the springs and cables is still in the system. Keep vehicles and people out from under it. If the door is partly open and unstable, clamp locking pliers onto the vertical track just below a roller on each side so it cannot travel further, then leave it.
What a Proper Repair Includes
Re seating the rollers is the easy part and the part that gets sold on its own. A complete repair also checks and re seats both cables on their drums, inspects every roller and hinge for damage caused during the derailment, straightens or replaces any deformed section of rail, re tensions and re balances the springs, tightens every bracket, and then resets the opener force and limits. If a quote covers only the first step, the door is going back onto the same conditions that took it off.
