Headroom, Radius and Low Clearance Track

Every track system is chosen against two measurements taken before the door was ever ordered. The Two Measurements

Headroom is the distance from the top of the opening to the lowest obstruction on the ceiling. Backroom is the depth from the opening back into the garage. A standard setup wants around twelve inches of headroom and the door height plus eighteen inches of backroom. Miss either and the standard parts cannot be used.

What the Radius Means

The curve is sold by its radius, most commonly twelve inch or fifteen inch. A fifteen inch curve is gentler, quieter and easier on a roller, and it wants more headroom. A twelve inch curve buys back a couple of inches of ceiling at the cost of a sharper direction change. The radius has to suit the drum size and the torsion spring, so it is not a part that can be swapped in isolation.

Low Clearance Kits

Where the header sits tight against the ceiling, a low clearance conversion moves the shaft in front of the door rather than above it and uses a double horizontal track. It works, it is common in older attached garages, and it has more moving parts than the standard arrangement. It also means a replacement rail has to be ordered as a low clearance part, which catches people out.

Where It Goes Wrong

Somebody replaces a damaged curve with whatever the counter had in stock, and a twelve inch radius meets a drum sized for fifteen. The door then runs, because most doors will run, but the cable geometry is slightly wrong at the transition and the top wheel takes a shove into the channel on every cycle. That garage gets a bent track eventually and nobody remembers why.

Ceiling Obstructions Nobody Counted

A water heater flue, a ceiling mounted opener rail set too low, storage racking and light fittings all steal headroom after the fact. The rear hanger has to drop below all of it, and a horizontal run hung at an angle to dodge an obstruction no longer matches its partner. Measuring Before You Order

Take the headroom at the middle of the opening and at both ends, since ceilings are rarely flat. Measure the backroom to the nearest permanent obstruction, not to the wall. Record the existing radius from the stamp on the curve or by measuring the chord. Those three numbers turn a track order from a guess into a part number.
